The Boat Captain

Micah has decided he wants to be a boat captain when he grows up. This was decided before any of the summer boating had happened. We're not exactly sure where the idea came from, except that Daddy had a brief conversation with him about steamboats prior to creating this Youtube video. Since then, he's been thoroughly convinced that he will be a boat captain (which is interesting, since he's not too keen on going fast in a boat).

He does seem to have it rather well-thought out, even though his logic is that of a two-year old. So this summer, Micah has been getting in some apprentice work on boats. He first served as the first mate on Mrs. Thurber's boat with Captain Alec. Next, he had an opportunity to actually take the helm when we took a ride with Ms Jill and Mr Kevin on Wolverine Lake.
Micah actually ended up driving halfway around Wolverine Lake and did a pretty good job paying attention to where he was going. He insisted that Daddy keep his hands off the wheel so he could do it himself.
Micah was thrilled to have this opportunity and it was a great set up for our planned trip to the UP for the Schmidt Vacation the next day, where we would be doing a lot of boating. We'll see what Micah really does end up picking as a career when he grows up, but perhaps he will own a kayak or something in his future!
Henry had his very first boat ride and enjoyed the breeze and sound of the water on Mr Kevin's boat. Surprisingly, he didn't scream the minute the life jacket went on (the way Micah did as a baby), but he did get a little tired and fussy before the tour of the lake was finished. Daddy's already talking about getting some fancy canoe, so maybe we'll have a lot more boating sooner than when Micah grows up (though Daddy did mention something about getting just a 3-man canoe... and kicking Mommy out when the boys get big enough to paddle)!
