Making Christmas Cookies - December 12, 2020

Every year Grandma Moldy invites us over to help cut out and decorate Christmas cookies. It's an annual tradition we have enjoyed since I was a child (some of the cookie cutters are from that era - and before).

The best part of cutting out the cookies is, of course, snitching the scraps of dough as we go along. The kids insisted on sampling scraps from every round of cutting.

Poppa is the expert with the colored sugars and other toppings. Henry helped him prepare all of our options. Henry's topping of choice this year was red hots; you knew which cookies he decorated by the excessive amount of red hots crowding the top of the cookie.
Grandma iced the cookies with her delicious almond-flavored icing (the almond extract is a more recent addition to our traditional icing - a change of which I heartily approve). Meanwhile, the kids and Poppa decorated the cookies, doing their best to resist the temptation to lick their fingers. (Though sometimes you just have to give in - and deal with the consequence of having to wash your hands afterwards.) Even in a strange Covid year, it's nice to be able to maintain these tasty traditions!
