Messy Days of Summer! July 27-Aug 2, 2015

Monday - Jello Day! Just because. :)
When we went out to water our plants on the patio, we discovered a friend who had taken up residence in Henry's watering can! He blended nicely with the patio tile. We had to watch out not to step on him several times!
Micah and Helen hammed it up for the camera together on the little chairs.
Helen started being able to climb out of the living room this week, going up both steps now. When we went to church Monday evening, she set to practicing climbing the stairs in the lobby there as well.
A few conversations from our week...
Micah: Why is this house always messy?!
Mom: Because kids live here!
On the way home from the grocery store, we drove past the bakery where we had gone on Fat Tuesday...
Micah: Is everyone in our family Polish?
Mom: (Enthusiastically) No! I'm not!
Micah: (Accusingly) Then why did you get to eat the Polish packzi doughnut?!
This week Micah and Mommy finished the Little House on the Prairie series (the original books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder - later we discovered there are newer books continuing the series by a different author). Mommy was reminded of how she disliked "The First Four Years" when she read it as a child - and it still was an unsatisfying read for her as the style of writing was just different from the others. We began reading "Mary Poppins," in anticipation of going to see the musical soon.
Micah and Helen definitely have a special bond!

Henry transformed an old box into a fishing boat.
Henry: Mother, I got a fish! You can have it.
Mom: What should I do with him?
Henry: You should snuggle him!
On Wednesday we headed to The Commons at 242 Church in Brighton to get our energy out, since it seemed too hot outside. Henry tried out the climbing wall (somewhat unsuccessfully).
 Going up!
 Coming down!

Helen watched the boys jumping around for a little bit.
But then she wanted to get out of the stroller and move around.
Her favorite spot was sitting (or standing) at the window and watching the cars drive by.

We moved onto the soccer field to really burn off the energy.

Henry had a little "Charlie Brown" move here...
On Thursday we went to St. Matthew's "Art in the Park" event.

There were several stations set up where you could create or experience different artistic elements.
However, once the boys saw the shaving cream station, there was really no point for them in the rest of the activities.
The started off using different tools to create designs in the shaving cream.
Once their hands got a bit messy, they tried wiping them off. This isn't so easy with shaving cream.
Since their hands were messy anyway, they decided to just embrace it. Henry was especially on board with this!
Micah began using his hands to play in the shaving cream. Henry decided he just wanted shaving cream all over himself (and he needed more!).
Then Micah had to get more as well... (Meanwhile, there's Henry, painting his arms...)

 Oh, what a glorious mess!
While some kids didn't want to do the shaving cream activity due to the messy nature, our boys really embraced it. Mommy loves watching them feel free to explore in this way (and she will remember to bring towels for them to sit on in the car on the way home next time!).
Time to rinse off in the bucket.
However, it was kind of fun playing in the water and that started a new game...
So Mom moved the bucket out into the sun (away from the other people, since this just upped the mess-factor), and away they went. They got special delight from dunking their hats into the water bucket.
Finally they settled down to eat a little snack and listen to a story.
Miss Peggy is one of our favorite storytellers! It was a fun morning and we stretched it out to the afternoon - brought our sandwiches to eat a little picnic and even stopped at the Dairy Twist for dessert on the way home (how could we not when we were just down the street...).
Thursday evening Daddy brought Tyshe home after work to spend the night. He and Micah played a little soccer in the yard. (Micah requires all guests to play soccer when they visit us these days!)

Meanwhile, Daddy and Henry played catch with the football. The next morning, Daddy and Tyshe took the canoe out fishing. Meanwhile, Mommy and the kids had an adventure of their own!

Saturday Mommy woke up with a very sore neck from Friday's car accident. We were grateful that Grandma was willing to watch the kids so we could shop for a new vehicle.
In the evening, the boys played outdoors while Daddy did some yard work. Helen watched wistfully from the bedroom.

Mommy was also amused as she watched out the window when the boys pulled out the sled and began to give each other rides in the front yard.
Nothing like a little bobsled practice in July, right?

The brothers took turns pulling, with differing results.
Sledding was abruptly ended when the boys were enticed by sparklers.
The first few we did were just ordinary, run-of-the-mill sparklers.

Then we opened a new box of different style sparklers.
They literally created a flame at the end. It was a bit terrifying, actually. Thankfully we had our red Solo cups!
Daddy did the Grand Finale for us at the end.

On Sunday, Helen "read" a book to Mommy.

This is a long-ish video, but it is fun to see how Helen's babble sounded at that time. She is very into turning book pages!
She successfully climbed up the steps, out of the living room, and retrieved the cup!
And then Helen got a hold of Mom's phone and took a few selfies.

Summer sure is a fun time for being silly and making messes!
