Helpers Oct 20-23

Some highlights (and photos) from our week...
- Henry helped Mommy with laundry. He was very good at taking down the old hand towels and putting them into the laundry room so she could replace/wash them. The upside of his nearly-two independence is his desire to be a helper. (And we're just going to focus on the upside here.)
- On Monday we made apple crisp (Mommy's favorite autumn dessert!). With the three kids, it took nearly 2.5 hours to complete (good thing we started it well before dinner). But it was worth it. Mommy had flashbacks of her own childhood. Her mom was the one who would slice the apples and Mommy was the one who would make the topping (because, it was so tasty to snitch while preparing it!). The boys didn't even have to be told about the snitching part - they naturally took to that role.
- Daddy's Uncle Brian and Aunt Connie came for a visit as they were in the area for the day. We were happy to spend the time and introduce them to Helen. Unfortunately, they couldn't stay long, not even for the apple crisp we had prepared (oh, well, more for us!).
 - After reading "Olivia Forms a Band," and watching a couple of youtube videos on the subject, Micah decided to make his own one-man-band (see video below).
 - Henry had his first experience with a coloring book - and liked it. Mommy was just as thrilled to have another idea for keeping him entertained during dinner prep.

 - Tuesday we had a "baby play date" with Simon Romines and Lucy Fairbanks (and their moms)
 - The three babies plotted how to take over the world.
 - After everyone left, Mommy decided on an impromptu trip to Target to see about getting a Rock and Play for Helen, since she seems to get more congested lying flat on her back (Mommy's latest coping strategy for the cleft palate). Amazingly, though this trip was not well thought out and ran dangerously close to nap time, the boys earned a mint for listening and obeying (mini Altoid mints are the motivation for appropriate behavior whenever Mommy travels with the three ring circus).
- The Target trip wore everyone out, so while the three kids slept, Mommy was able to call her Grandpa Moldy to wish him a happy birthday (wow - an uninterrupted phone call!).
- Daddy got on standby to get a faster flight home from Chicago and arrived before bedtime. So Mommy didn't even mind the living room being turned into a rowdy soccer pitch. For the first time, Henry joined in the game with the other two boys.
 - We did story time at the Lyon Township Library on Wednesday.
- Helen is continuing to find her voice (with "encouragement" from her big brothers)
 - Micah surprised Mommy by combing his own hair (after first wetting it down, of course).
 - This happened... "Hey, Mom, I took all the stuff from the living room and piled it up on the couch, just like the Grinch!" (On a positive note, the rest of the living room appeared clean momentarily.)
- Lots of snuggles with sleepy Helen.
 - Sister seems to love her new bed. She took to sleeping in the rock and play quite well.
 - Setsuko and Tomo came over. What fun! Micah wanted to have a turn to take a group photo.
 Mommy took a photo, too.
 - Micah showed his photos on his camera to his little sister.
 - While Mommy was busy in the other room (probably changing a diaper), Micah came in and said, "Mom, I have something to show you - a special surprise. It's something really cool I made with paper. And you'll be like, 'Please don't do that again.'" Mommy was nervous but she found a picture Micah had created with paper, pen, yarn, and glue. It didn't look bad, so Mommy wasn't sure why Micah thought he would be in trouble for it. Then he reminded her that he had been in trouble for using scissors before- from when he had cut the fabric of the dining room chair. To accomplish this, he had also taken a kitchen chair into the laundry room to get the glue and scissors from up in the cupboard. Thankfully, nothing was damaged and he was equally proud of himself and contrite.
