To celebrate Micah's 4th birthday, we spent the day at the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum. This was on account of Micah repeatedly asking us to go back to the Curious Kids Museum we went to for his 3rd birthday because the photos from that day were featured on the October page of our calendar Mommy made. We decided to try out a new museum, closer to home. We liked it so much, we bought a membership!
Cousin Calla, Uncle Andy, and Grandma Moldy came along to enjoy the museum with us.
The ambulance was a hit, of course (seems like every kids' museum has an ambulance, but our boys don't tire of them).
The big bubble maker was fun for all three kids (and Grandma).
Later, we discovered that you were just supposed to pull on the chain to lift the bubble up in the air from the outside of the bubble maker - but it was so much better to stand inside and pull the bubble up over ourselves!
Daddy and Henry explored together.
Micah found another way to play with bubbles.
Later, we moved to the preschool play room, where Micah found an alligator at the water table (we have lots of discussions about alligators with this four-year old, so this was an appropriate choice).
Fire chief Micah to the rescue!
Henry liked climbing to the top of the play house...
... as did Dr Micah and Dr Calla.
Who is this guy??
Our doctors donned firefighter helmets and became an EMS rescue crew.
We didn't have time to enjoy all the areas of the museum before it was time to go home for lunch, but we saved the best for last - a trip to the water area (figuring we would end up with some wet clothes!).
Micah and Daddy worked to figure out how to get the balls moving through the water system.
Henry and Grandma discovered how to keep the ball in the air with water.
Micah created a water pipe system.
Soon, Calla joined him.
And then Daddy and Uncle Andy got into the action. (It seemed that the dads had at least as much fun as the kids that day!)
While they waited for Helen to eat her lunch, the crew collaborated to build up a wall. The best part, of course, was running and crashing into it to knock it down when it was time to go.
Back at home, we were joined by Poppa Moldy, Aunt Heather, and Albert as the celebration continued. Micah enjoyed the cake made to his exact specifications - a pink layer and a green layer, chocolate frosting, circular shape, with crushed peanut butter cups, candles, and a number four on the top.
Just to prove that Helen really was part of the celebration - Mommy took this photo. But she slept most of the time at the museum (when she wasn't eating or getting her diaper changed). While getting that last diaper change, Grandma popped into the museum restroom to ask Mommy if Henry was in there with her. It seems he had disappeared - apparently, to go to another floor of the museum to go back to the bubble area. (The lesson here is that Henry needs an adult chaperon assigned to be his buddy the whole time!)
After our lunch of macaroni and cheese (per the birthday boy's request) and the birthday dessert, Micah opened his gifts. Daddy was especially thrilled to take Micah to the garage to uncover his surprise F150 truck.
Micah had been asking for some kind of motorized vehicle for a while. Mommy thought that was a bit excessive for a four-year old (and gives her scary visions of him driving a real vehicle sooner than she will be ready for). But Daddy really lobbied for this one.
In the end, Mommy realized that it was just as much about Daddy's childhood dream as it was about Micah's. While Mommy doesn't understand it fully, maybe there will be a similar situation during Helen's childhood someday. So she relented.
Though he was super excited about this new treasure, and Calla was right there ready to start the adventure with him, once he got behind the wheel and looked out into the driveway, Micah paused. He began to question whether he could safely operate the vehicle out of the garage door.
Calla, not one to be cautious like her cousin, seized the opportunity and jumped in the driver's seat.
Micah resorted to pushing the truck to a safe distance from the garage, where he would feel comfortable to practice his driving skills without fear of hitting walls.
Henry wasn't going to be left out from the fun!
Micah did finally get a chance to enjoy driving his new truck and the three kids rode off into the sunset (well, at least to the edge of the property line).
After the truck was safely parked back in the garage, Micah set out to record some memories of his own with the new camera from Grandma and Poppa. This day was a pretty good way to spend Micah's last day of being three!
