MLK and Schmidt Family Christmas - Week of Jan 18, 2016

A fun week together... sometimes. This week Helen was given the nickname "The Knocking Down Monster." And the boys resorted to playing more in their room to avoid her antics.
Projects work well, though, when Helen is confined to her highchair.
And the boys are still playing with water...
On Monday we recognized Martin Luther King Junior with a painting project about our "dreams."

Henry really liked the idea of tracing our hands and wanted to continue that portion of the project.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day! Kids have dreams for their world, too.
Micah's dream: "That there would be more policemen in the areas where pirates live"
Henry's dream: "Share together" (which he took to heart, and as soon as Mom turned her back, began "sharing Micah's project" by writing his signature "H" graffiti on it)
When we read about segregation in a book about MLK, Micah asked Mom, "Are we black?"
 Zip line fun on Tuesday.
This was Henry's first time to participate in a zip line day. He was excited to choose his stuffed animal to drop down the line.

Then the boys set up a construction site, complete with a "slow/stop" sign for passersby (a.k.a Mom, who used the time to pick up and put things away between the living room and the bedrooms).

 Snuggles with Henry!
Daddy worked from home on Tuesday and Henry helped make Dad's scrambled eggs, even stirring them. He was pretty excited to assist.
Helen helped the boys build a "house" for their cars and planes.

She really did assist in getting out the blocks, and thankfully they were patient enough to allow her to help.
A little costumed dance party in the evening, with some Junior Brown ("Highway Patrol").

Wednesday we were back to painting. Helen tried the glittery paint and was intrigued with it on her fingers.

The music stand at Chit Chat Club can be used like a pulpit! We created a puppet show about John the Baptist (their CBS lesson this week) and Micah was our narrator.

Back at home, some science experiments about how many marbles we could fit into our foil boats before they would sink. When we were careful, it was impressive how many the foil boat would hold.
Then it was just fun to play with the marbles in the water.

Friday we spent the morning at the library. We ran into Micah's old German friend Caitlin (she had attended Miss Jane's library class with us) and they played together.

Love the quiet after a trip to the library!
Saturday we had swimming lessons again. Mom went in the pool with Micah this week, after last week's fiasco. He actually stayed in the pool the whole time. This was a major improvement. He said, "It wasn't so bad," after finally getting on the barbell and away from the wall. It was a major test in Mom's patience and teaching ability, but it felt like a success (and Mom even felt sore the next day - she's not used to holding Micah, even if it is in a pool). Henry dunked his head underwater four times. He hated it and cried, but was very proud of himself and told everyone proudly afterwards that he had dunked his head four times.
On Sunday we attended the Schmidt Family Christmas - first a meal at Ponderosa. The boys got to sit with the big girls, who were shocked by Henry the "bone crusher." He asked Mom if he could eat his chicken bone. She said he could chew on it like a dog, but not eat eat. However, he apparently did. This greatly impressed the girls. And Henry's reputation as "The Bone Crusher" had begun.
