"A" is for Animals! Detroit Zoo, Sept 17, 2015

We were surprised to be given a family membership to the Detroit Zoo at church this month and so we began to take advantage of it immediately! Grandma Moldy LOVES going to the zoo (she always appreciated it even more than her kids when they were growing up). So we just had to bring her along with us. And the first stop was the traditional photo spot.

Looking for the beavers (2016 note: In our whole year of having the membership, we've never seen the beavers in a visible spot!).

Uncle Andy happened to have that day off of work, so his crew joined us for the day as well. What fun to explore the zoo together!
The tiger was up and walking around. Always fascinating to see those big cats!
Cousin Albert checked out the rhinos.
The zebra and Helen wore matching shirts - how embarrassing!

All of a sudden, Aunt Heather spotted a female mallard duck on our path.
Coaxing the duck to come closer for a really personal view.

Giraffes
We stopped for a lunch break just after the giraffes, in view of the bears. (Naturally, because this was the place where we picnicked the first time we went to the zoo in their memory, the kids assumed that we should always eat our lunch in that same spot.)

But the kids weren't interested in sitting still for too long.
Micah and Calla checked out the map to see where we would go next.
What was that noise?! The kids went into the landscaping to discover it was an Emu on the other side of the fence.
Inside the Australian Outback, where Grandma (naturally) stopped to read every sign.
A clearer view of the emu.
Inside the Arctic Ring of Life, the kids were intrigued by the ice wall.

This was the first time we had actually seen the polar bear out and about. It was amazing!

Such a fun day at the zoo with family. We are very thankful!
