Memorial Weekend 2012

Memorial Day weekend was a great family time as some of the Roes headed over our way. But before we get to that, there was a little prep work involved. Since Mommy was finally starting to feel a little better with the morning sickness, we went out a did a little yard work on Saturday. The flower beds really needed some attention (or rather, the weeds). Underneath all that, we found some lovely perennials already beginning to bloom, which makes our new home even more exciting! (I also found some areas where the deer had been doing some pruning of their own...)

Micah truly is an outdoor boy, so this was a great day for him. He took on the role of "helper" - helping Mommy weed and Daddy mow the trail in the woods. But he branched out on his own when we began planting some day lilies I received from a friend. While our backs were turned, Micah decided to sample an entire fistful of dirt. Apparently this natural cuisine agreed with him because he wasn't interested in spitting it back out, despite my best efforts at demonstrating how fun spitting could be. As we hurried inside to rinse out his mouth, he spent the time crunching up the dirt with his little teeth. And he smiled big for the "after" photo above. Sigh.

Before the Roe visitors arrived, we had a very special first-time visitor to our yard Sunday morning. As we looked out the front windows before church, we could see a mother deer laying down and licking off her new-born fawn. It was tough to capture the moment on film (they were both notably camera shy), but you can kind of see the baby near mom's legs and then scampering off after mom into the trees behind out second garage. This was the second fawn birth (of which we are aware) this spring (twins were born earlier that week!)... a real special treat of living out in the "country"!

Finally, on Sunday afternoon Grandma & Poppa, Kenny, Levi & Marissa came to spend the holiday weekend with us. Actually, it was a return visit for Levi. He and Isaiah had spent the week prior at our house (they had job training in the area) . It was so nice having Micah's uncles around! He loved spending time with him and they were so great with him. But Micah waited until Kenny arrived to learn his new word of the weekend "Uncle". He still keeps talking about "Uncle Kenny"! (He also was talking about "Uncle Poppa" the other day, so I'm not sure he gets it all yet).

Poppa brought along some "noisy" tools that were pretty cool as well. One was a power washer, which saw a lot of use around the property. Uncle Levi was the expert (he's a bit more of a perfectionist than Daddy) and he used it to write Micah's name in the courtyard. :) You can see what a big difference a good washing did to that cement!

The other "noisy" word that Micah learned (and still talks a lot about) was "chainsaw." It really impressed him to see Poppa cutting down a tree and making it into logs!

We're pretty thankful they came and put in some labor during a holiday weekend. But it wasn't all work and no play. We enjoyed a trip to our favorite frozen custard place and checked out the downtown Brighton Memorial Day parade. I've got to be honest and say that this was pretty disappointing for me in a small town parade. I grew up in a small town and the Charlotte Frontier Days parade is a whole lot more exciting than Brighton's. But it was interesting enough for Micah and being as hot as it was (I forgot about how much more quickly my pregnant body heats up!), it was ok that it was over as soon as it was. We came back home and enjoyed a great cookout (true Roe style, there was at least one dish with bacon!) and nice family time. Thankful to all our troops who have sacrificed to give us the freedom to enjoy and celebrate together!
