Our small group has been in existence for a while now (Six years? Seven years?). In the beginning, we started up as a group to go through the 40 Days of Purpose together when all of St. Matthew went through that study. After that initial study, we decided to hang together. Through the years, we've seen a lot of changes - started off as a mixed gender group, then ended up as a "girls only" club for several years, and finally added guys back into the mix about two years ago. And since that time, we grew too big to be really called a "small group" any more. After 6 months of wrestling with what to do, we determined the best course of action was to split our large group into two smaller groups. It was hard, knowing we wouldn't be together as regularly, but God has blessed the endeavor because both groups have grown since our split. Still, we like to periodically gather as one large group for events throughout the year.

Last Sunday we did just that - gathering for a potluck and game of softball on the church diamond. It was HOT that day. But we still played nine innings (10 by some counts - somehow we had two "7th inning stretches"). And it was a lot of fun, even though most of us weren't very good.

We even invited my little brother David to join us (though his team ended up beating ours, so maybe it wasn't so good). Unfortunately, our star player, Jan, was on the injured reserves, with a walking cast on her leg. So she sat behind the backstop and was our umpire (though she really acted more like an encouraging coach!).
