Gone Fishing - Aug 20, 2015

On Thursday, Aug 20 we met our friend Miss Jan at Kensington Metropark for a fishing adventure.
Our day started with a picnic, which attracted some uninvited guests.
We were surprised how bold the sandhill cranes were - obviously they have been fed by people before.

Eventually, the boys clapped their hands to shoo the cranes away so we could eat our meal in peace.
After lunch it was off to our new fishing spot.
This was the first time we had fished off of this pier. The summer before, we had gone fishing with Jan and the Yoshihara family when they visited MI. But at that time, we had fished near the small marina in Kensington. The fishing had been great there - the fish were biting as soon as we put the lines in. But this location was even better because we didn't have the fear of a child (Henry) getting too close to the edge and taking an unexpected swim!
Miss Jan was the expert - baiting their hooks...
... and taking the fish off the lines.

Henry was more interested at looking at the fish in the bucket than actually catching them. He also was quite friendly with the other fishermen who shared the fishing pier with us - he wanted to look into their buckets as well.

Micah's first fish!
Micah really enjoyed the fishing experience and the opportunity to practice his casting. He kept Miss Jan busy as he reeled in his catch.
Initially, Henry wasn't as interested in the act of fishing as he was chatting with the people and looking at fish.

Henry did find a way to get the pole down to his comfortable level (though we wondered if it would be a challenge to then pull a fish up through the railing).

Helen was also intrigued by the fish in the bucket. She spent most of the time in the carrier with mom, where she could get a good view of all that was going on.
Teamwork - Miss Jan patiently sat with Henry to help him get his first fish on.

Micah assisted with the net.
Henry's first fish!

It was fun looking for fish in the water as well.
When we were done, it was time to release the fish back into the lake.
This was also a fun experience!
After that, they had to wash out the bucket on the shore.

And a few more fish at the end.
What a very fun day it was!
